Exterior algebra and dynamical systems (Part 1)
Abstract
I’ll give a (gentle) introduction to tensor algebra focussed, in particular, on exterior algebra and motivated by certain problems in dynamical systems. Once the basic framework is set up, exterior algebra provides elegant tools for studying various questions in linear algebra and calculus. It also provides a natural approach to problems involving the evolution of generalised “volumes” under the action of a dynamical system. Such approaches have, for example, proved useful in making claims about convergence, stability and bifurcation in systems of differential equations arising from biology and chemistry.
